In this final part on the subject of weight loss, I am going to discuss the final missing link to my weight loss program. In previous blogs, I discuss the importance of diet and exercise; but, in reality all three components are necessary:pills, perspiration and diet. All three are necessary for a successful program to attain your individual weight loss goal. I use three drugs to aid in your weight loss program; they are phentermine, Qysmia, and Belviq. Remember, they are helpful, but they only play a small part in the total picture. You didn’t take pills to gain weight, and you don’t only take pills to lose weight. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant and it speeds up your metabolism-its not uncommon to lose 5-10 pounds in the first month.Unfortunately, its only recommended for 6-8 weeks! Some doctors keep patients on this drug for longer periods of time, but I don’t. Diet, exercise, and behavior modification are and always will be the most important and long lasting habits to develop to maintain and ideal weight. Qysmia, a relatively new comer, is a combination of phentermine and toprimate, an anti-seizure medication which in combination helps speed up your metabolism and suppress your cravings in the afternoon. It works well, and can be taken for a long time, but its expensive and can run you about $120 dollars a month even with insurance and copays. Finally, Belviq is the newest of the appetite suppressants, and it also can cost about $120 dollars a month; it works in the base of the brain and effects the appetite center so it makes you feel full sooner, so you eat less; this can also be taken for an extended period of time. Since it is relatively new, most insurance companies don’t cover it; but, as time passes, I suspect more and more third party payors will cover this medication. I have used all three drugs and they all work when combined with eating less and exercising more. If you are interested in trying one of these appetite suppressants, make an appointment with me to discuss which one may be right for you. What have you got to lose except a lot of unwanted pounds!
