Wait a minute! How the heck can cancer save lives? There’s nothing that can cause more fear and dread in a person than hearing that you have cancer; its a sinking, desperate, helpless feeling that you experience when you learn that you just have gotten picked to have this dreaded cancer in your body, and there’s nothing that you can do about it! Or is there? The good news is that there is something you can do now. Its cheap, safe, effective, and reliable. Its called family history. Your friendly super sleuth doctor is just a phone call away; an appointment and a detailed history of your family’s cancers can exposure your risk and guide you in screening for potentially 25 cancer producing genes-all through a simple tube of blood!
Do you qualify? A simple brief questionnaire that can be filled out in a few minutes will give your doctor the information he needs. But, not very many physicians provide this service or are interested in your family cancer history. The specific guidelines will be discussed in the next blog, but if you have a family member with breast, ovarian , or colon cancer you should be curious and concerned. Your doctor should be too. If not, find a physician who is willing to take the time and effort to review your family history and make the right decision whether or not to test you for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC). We are now just scratching the surface of genetic screening for all sorts of deadly cancers, so what you don’t know can either kill you or make a miserable life for you fighting a cancer which could have cured long before it appeared. A simple blood test can prevent a lot of headache and heart ache in your life and love ones! Information is not only power but life changing for you and all your family. Be smart and proactive-you’ll be glad you did!
