I am involved with the newest imaging center for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Flower Mound. This has been open for the last couple of weeks. It is located on the 2nd floor of the medical office building on the corner of FM2499(Long Prairie Rd.) and Central park in front of the hospital. We are proud to announce the latest technology for breast imaging with the recent purchase of a 3D breast imaging unit. The “fancy” term for this is: 3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) which yields lower recall rates for patients, an increased overall cancer detection rate, and an increased detection rate for invasive cancer when compared with conventional 2D digital mammography (DM) . In a recent study of over 59,000 patients the results were striking: an increase in the detection rate for cancer overall of 28% and a 43% increase in detecting invasive cancer in patients screened with 3D DBT versus 2D DM. This is amazing! Although it is not considered the “standard of care” by most insurance companies, I suspect it will be soon when it is demanded by my patients. Until that time arrives, there is usually a nominal charge of less than $100.00 to have this performed over the routine conventional 2D mammogram. Whether or not there is a family history of breast cancer, I can’t imagine anyone not asking for this new and wonderful technology! Demand it! You’ll be glad you did!
